God’s “Very Good” Design

“Now that same-sex marriage has been legalized, how will that effect your book?” My friend Diane sounded quite concerned. “Do you think it might hurt your chances of getting published?”As a member of the focus group who had helped me refine the ideas for A Wife of Valor: Your Strategic Importance in God’s Battle Plan,  Diane had a pretty clear grasp of my views on biblical marriage.

My book is aimed at Christian women in committed, heterosexual marriages. It has very little to say about homosexuality or same-sex marriage. Even so, Diane’s question made me realize that the basic biblical truths upon which my book is founded are becoming increasingly controversial.

The message that God intentionally created human beings to be both male and female, and that He considered that design to be “Very Good,” used to be considered self-evident. Now, it is being challenged at every turn. A multitude of voices clamor that we should regard any differences between the sexes as irrelevant, but I’m more convinced than ever that men and women were created to complement one another, covering each other’s greatest areas of vulnerability with their unique strengths.

Although this message has become too risky for most mainstream publishers, I cannot abandon the truths God has entrusted to me. I know I must boldly deliver His message to a world that needs to hear it now more than ever.  I will publish A Wife of Valor independently, if necessary, because so many Christian marriages stand to benefit from its message. Some will undoubtedly consider what I have to say controversial. But then, isn’t that true of just about anything that’s really worth saying?f

The Things We Cannot Change

There is a prayer which has been made popular by twelve step groups that goes like this: “God, grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can, and the WISDOM to know the difference.”

Bruce Jenner’s attempts to transform himself from a man into a woman have attracted a lot of attention from the media in recent weeks. I find I can’t go to the grocery store without seeing his face plastered across any number of magazines. This fascination with Jenner and his transition underscores how quickly our society is losing touch with the wisdom to know the difference between the things we should courageously attempt to change, and the things we should learn to accept with serenity.

There is an “inconvenient truth” of biology that I feel needs to be brought to light about Jenner, one that many seem to be trying hard to suppress. No matter what Jenner may do to alter his body surgically, no matter what hormones his doctors my pump into his system, within the nucleus of every cell of his body there will always be both an X and a Y chromosome. On the cellular level, he will always be male. Modern medical science can’t do a thing to change that.

This is an important truth to recognize, because it goes to the heart of the gender identity issue. From conception, we are all genetically either male or female. This is an unalterable biological reality. So why are some trying so hard to deny this basic fact of nature?

It all boils down to rebellion against the Creator, and the way he has made us.  We want to be the captains of our fate and the masters of our own destinies, even when that flies in the face of nature itself. Modern science will do everything in its power to “play God” instead of bowing the knee to the God of the universe and his created order.

I don’t doubt that Jenner is very unhappy with his life. However, his doctors and the people who truly love him should be trying to help him find serenity regarding the things he cannot change, including his biological sex. Instead, they seem quite eager to  enable him to prop up the illusion that he can make himself into a woman. This is not an act of love or compassion, but a tragic lack of wisdom. May God deliver us from such pride and foolishness.

The God Who Sees Me

Crystal Acosta's avatarCrystal's Corner

One of my writer friends has a four-year-old son, Moses, who prays the sweetest prayer, “Thank you, God, for to see us.” And yes, that’s exactly the way he expresses it.

He gets this prayer from the Biblical story of Hagar. She becomes pregnant by her master, Abraham, which causes problems for her with her mistress, Sarah. (Read the entire story in Genesis, chapter 16).

The Bible says that Sarah mistreated Hagar, and finally drove her away into the desert. There she meets with the angel of the Lord, who tells her to go back to her mistress. He tells her that she will have a son whose descendants will be too numerous to count.

“She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me.’” (Genesis 16:13).

This story is special to Moses and his family because Moses is being treated for…

A Fertile Imagination

When I was a little girl, adults often asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” While other kids proclaimed they would become ballerinas, or astronauts, my answer was always the same: “I want to be a writer.”

In elementary school, I begged my teachers for creative writing assignments. As a fifth grader, I won a school-wide short story competition. I’d always been a voracious reader, so it seemed only natural to become an English major in college. My destiny as a writer seemed assured.

Then I grew up. In the crucible of adult life, I became many things: a wife, a mother, a survivor of both cancer and manic depression. But not a writer. I didn’t even have the stamina to keep a journal. Coping with life was challenge enough.

I’d almost forgotten my childhood aspirations, when a remarkable thing happened: the movie version of The Return of the King hit the box office. A Tolkien fanatic since age ten, I was eager to see how director Peter Jackson would handle the concluding chapter of The Lord of the Rings.

There were many things about Jackson’s film that pleased me, but one glaring detail rankled. I needed to hear Arwen say that Aragorn’s love was worth dying for, that she wanted him for himself, not just for the child they might one day have together.

Obsessed by this fatal flaw, I began rewriting scenes in my head. I found myself reciting new dialog while folding clothes or mopping the kitchen floor. The only way to get this thing out of my brain was to put it down on paper.

Having completed my own “brilliant” adaptation of the script, I went on a quest to share it with readers, and stumbled across the shadowy corner of the internet devoted to fan fiction. In these semi-clandestine forums, fans with clever screen names write stories featuring the worlds and characters created by their favorite authors. This guilty pleasure, which can hardly be spoken of in the company of serious writers, became the outlet for my now rejuvenated muse. The direct, if sometimes harsh, feedback of impassioned readers quickly forced me to whip my prose into shape.

Through story, I was able to explore questions that I’d always had about J.R.R. Tolkien’s work. Like an art student copying old masters in the Louvre, I spent two years copying Tolkien’s masterful voice. Then suddenly one day, I discovered my own.

Original stories began forming in my mind, stories with characters and settings born of my own imagination. I sought out local writers’ groups and researched markets for speculative fiction. I devoured every resource in nearby libraries about the craft and business of writing.

During this new phase of my journey, I determined to send out one story each month for twelve months. Like a woman trying to get pregnant, I watched the calendar, assuring myself that if my imagination was indeed as fertile as I hoped, I would achieve publication within the year.

It worked! After many polite rejection letters, and numerous rewrites, my first original story appeared in the Mindflights ezine. No fortieth birthday present could have been more rewarding than that first royalty check.

In the seven years since then, I have achieved many more writing milestones, including winning a scholarship to the Mount Hermon Christian Writers Conference last spring. But perhaps the sweetest achievement came this past fall as I was filling out a college scholarship application for my son. In the box labeled “Mother’s Occupation,” I finally had the courage to put down “Writer.”
