The Things We Cannot Change

There is a prayer which has been made popular by twelve step groups that goes like this: “God, grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can, and the WISDOM to know the difference.”

Bruce Jenner’s attempts to transform himself from a man into a woman have attracted a lot of attention from the media in recent weeks. I find I can’t go to the grocery store without seeing his face plastered across any number of magazines. This fascination with Jenner and his transition underscores how quickly our society is losing touch with the wisdom to know the difference between the things we should courageously attempt to change, and the things we should learn to accept with serenity.

There is an “inconvenient truth” of biology that I feel needs to be brought to light about Jenner, one that many seem to be trying hard to suppress. No matter what Jenner may do to alter his body surgically, no matter what hormones his doctors my pump into his system, within the nucleus of every cell of his body there will always be both an X and a Y chromosome. On the cellular level, he will always be male. Modern medical science can’t do a thing to change that.

This is an important truth to recognize, because it goes to the heart of the gender identity issue. From conception, we are all genetically either male or female. This is an unalterable biological reality. So why are some trying so hard to deny this basic fact of nature?

It all boils down to rebellion against the Creator, and the way he has made us.  We want to be the captains of our fate and the masters of our own destinies, even when that flies in the face of nature itself. Modern science will do everything in its power to “play God” instead of bowing the knee to the God of the universe and his created order.

I don’t doubt that Jenner is very unhappy with his life. However, his doctors and the people who truly love him should be trying to help him find serenity regarding the things he cannot change, including his biological sex. Instead, they seem quite eager to  enable him to prop up the illusion that he can make himself into a woman. This is not an act of love or compassion, but a tragic lack of wisdom. May God deliver us from such pride and foolishness.
